HISTORY OF ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI

  • St. Francis of Assisi was born in Assisi, Italy in 1181 or 1182.
  • He was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant and was raised in a life of privilege.
  • However, as he grew older, he became disillusioned with the materialistic and superficial lifestyle of his family and began to seek a more meaningful existence.
  • In 1206, Francis had a spiritual awakening while praying in the dilapidated chapel of San Damiano. He heard the voice of Christ telling him to “repair my church, which is in ruins.”
  • Francis took this message to heart and began to dedicate his life to living in poverty, humility, and service to others. Francis’ devotion to a life of poverty and simplicity quickly gained him followers.
  • In 1209, he founded the Franciscan Order, which emphasized poverty, humility, and the love of God.
  • The order was unique in that it was not restricted to men of noble birth, but was open to anyone who wished to follow its teachings.
  • Francis and his followers traveled throughout Italy and Europe, preaching the message of love, peace, and service to others. They lived among the poor and downtrodden, often taking care of the sick and dying.
  • One of Francis’ most famous acts of service was his preaching to the birds. Legend has it that he often stopped to preach to the birds, who would gather around him and listen attentively.
  • Francis also deeply revered nature, believing that all of God’s creations were equal and deserving of respect. He is often depicted in art with animals, particularly birds and wolves.
  • Francis’ teachings and way of life continue to inspire people around the world. He died on October 3, 1226, at the age of 44, and was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1228.

He is the patron saint of animals, the environment, and Italy.

DISCOVER THE PATH OF ST FRANCIS

The St Francis Path runs from Tuscany, crosses Umbria, and finishes in Rome. The walk leads through olive groves, stunning romantic valleys, and enchanting small villages.

The path takes its name from the Saint who lived in Umbria in these valleys: St Francis of Assisi. Therefore the itinerary links together several places that witnessed his life.

For the Catholics, particularly those devoted to the Saint, this is a pilgrimage route intended to explore the lands that the “Poor Man” walked through on his travels and feel closer to his preachings.

Moreover, you’ll experience natural and artistic places on the Way. The “Franciscan path” passes through many fascinating medieval towns and villages. Not to mention the food, with the black truffle of Spello or the red wine of Montefalco. The foodies won’t get bored, I promise.

This is a promise: the landscapes that the pilgrim will see are the same that brought joy to the simple heart of St Francis.

Walking along the St Francis’ Way is an authentic spiritual journey that satisfies man’s desire to seek the meaning of his existence deep within himself.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL

What many consumers don’t realize is something that people living millennia ago in ancient Greece took for granted; extra virgin olive oil, all by itself, is one of the best beauty secrets.

First, Olive Oil is a natural, hypoallergenic skin moisturizer.

Furthermore, virgin olive oil has the advantage of providing potent antioxidants, including vitamins E and K.

These vitamins help repair and renew skin damaged from overexposure to sun and air pollution. Other modern-day environmental hazards like cigarette smoke and fast food create aging effects on the skin.

The nutrients in olive oil naturally stimulate cells and return skin to a firmer, smoother, and healthier state.

Let’s provide a slightly more scientific explanation. Skin damage is related to the destructive activity of oxygen-related free radicals produced by skin cells.

Polyphenolic components of olive oil are like the traditional antioxidants, such as tocopherols, used by the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry to prevent skin damage.

There are several simple and inexpensive ways to get the best skincare and beauty benefits from a single bottle of extra virgin olive oil.

The rich emollients in olive oil allow just a little to go a long way.
